is the ps the same as a cars ps? my bro does not have ps and he can turn his outdrive nice and smooth but i have ps and it is hard to move. so my ? is does the ps on a boat have to be hard to turn when motor is running?:confused:

Ayuh,... I'd sooner think your Problem is with the Cable,+ Not the P/S system...

99% of the steering problems on boats are either the cable bad or the cable being corroded in the PS unit at the transom (See picture)
Disconnect the attaching nut and see if the wheel turns easily, if it does, the cable is ok. Then remove the clevis pin B and see if you can move the cable inside the aluminum tube. If not, or it's very stiff, then you have a corrosion problem. Remove the cable from the tube clean it all up, grease it and put it back together and your steering will probably work fine again.

Yup, that's what happened to me, not a big deal to change the entire cable and it was good as new after that.

..just kidding, I misread your original post, thought it wouldnt turn at all. Id have to agree with Don S on this one.

i know post is old but just a update the cable was fine the problem was the ps was bad so i took the ps out and rip all the parts out and but it back with out the piston and parts and i also removed the ps pump and it is working better then when i had the ps installed.. thanks guys

Sounds like the control valve in the ps unit was out of adjustment...
