Mercruiser Saltwater Flushing

Prior to winterizing my boat I've been told I should flush the engines with a "saltwater flushing" product. I am not familiar with these products. Can someone recommend one and also the process that should be followed prior to adding the anti-freeze. <br />Thanks.

Salt-Away is what you flush it with. The process before antifreeze?????? antifreeze where, what engine?

Do you have a raw-water cooling system or a closed cooling system? If raw-water, try a product called Salt-X www.salt-x.com. It's biodegradable and can be used to flush your engine as well as wipe down any surfaces that are exposed to salt air/spray. Follow the directions on the bottle for proper mixture ratio and run it through your engine the same way you would fill it with antifreeze. I think you can pick this stuff up at your local Boater's World or West Marine.<br />If you have a closed system, I don't know why you would have to "flush" the engine. Antifreeze has corrosion inhibitors in it already.

I just finished winterizing my MerCruiser MAG MPI. My owners manual just said "flush", "with fresh water" is assumed. However, any of the above products will help prolong the life of the engine. Mines a straight inboard so I just disconnected the intake hose, put the hose in a bucket and ran the engine for a while using fresh water. I then pulled the garden hose out of the bucket and dumped the -60 degree purple anti-freeze in there, I was told the purple stuff had better chemicals to protect the metal better......<br /><br />Good Luck
