Hello All,

Your forums seem to be very helpful and everyone here seems to be full of information. I am a newbie and I have a 1986 Welcraft 190 American. It is rated for 175 HP. Currently it has a Mercruiser 170 in it. The engine is seized as it was submerged in salt water. Should I part it out, or could I get a good price for it as scrap metal?

If the engine was submerged in salt water and not cleaned out, it's scrap metal. Good price or not.

The drive will be mostly salvagable.

Is there a method or test to see if the Outdrive is Ok? the steering is frozen on this by the way...

I recommend you remove the drive to keep it from rusting into the motor. Check for water in the drive gear oil. If the gear oil is milky, or water comes out when you drain it, get it pressure tested, and hope the water was not in there too long. If the gear oil is not mikly, the outdrive is likely fine. The carb, water pump, power steering cooler and manifolds should be reuseable, but the electrics and trim pump motor are likely junk. The power steering pump and unit need to be checked for water infiltration.

Just How Deep did this Saltwater Get,..??..??........

The Drive might just be the Only Salvage................

I took off the prop and drained the oil and the MOST VILE SMELLING LIQUID came out. It was of a green hue. I drained it thoroughly. I am in the process of removing it to check the parts, but something in the upper gear casing is frozen and will not let me remove it easily.

The prop shaft spins freely, however.

As for how far it sunk in salt water, I am unsure. I am assuming a total submerssion.

Pressure testing...what does it mean, and how can I get this accomplished?

Could you send me your engine serial #? I may be able to use your conplete induction system if it is a 4bbl

If That's the Case,..........

The Only Salvage is the Bare Fiberglass Hull.............
