mercruiser shifting problems

I have a 1967 120 hp mercruiser #2055736 with a sterndrive #2072395. It will not shift into forward gear. I adjusted the shift cables from one side all the way to the other in small increments but one way gets me no shifting at all while the other way gets me stuck in revers. I was told it is likely to be a worn lower shift cable and I downloaded the online manual but I cant find out how to check this part. It is an $80 cable and I don't want to have to change it just to find out that it is not the problem. Does anyone know of any other things to check or how to check the cable? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: mercruiser shifting problems

Remove the lower shift cable from the shift plate and see if you can get it into gear directly. I would suspect that an engine of that age may have just a build up of sloppiness throughout the system. You'll have to start at the leg end and remove all the slop out of the system. Not really an easy job, but it will be the only way you'll find out if you have a problem that needs extra work.
