Mercruiser shifting trouble

Hi, I have just purchased a boat with pretty new 4.3L Mercruiser engine and also a fairly new outdrive. Everything was fine a couple times out on the water, but the last time I went out the prop was spinning slowly in reverse while in the N position and then I put it in forward and gave it gas and it started going backwards in reverse  The previous owner put in the new outdrive and said that that the gears in the upper had gone bad last year, so he had it fixed under warranty. He also had a new throttle cable installed not too long ago. I hope that it's something as simple as a cable adjustment, but I really don't know what to think. Any ideas of what could be causing this??

Ya got any serial numbers for this "Rebuilt drive under warranty"?
Years, type of drive, any information that someone that can't see it would help.
But a SN is manditory for me.

The outdrive is made by sterndrive engineering and it is a SE 106 model. I think the serial # for the upper is 90-106-01B and the lower is 90-106-02. Hope this helps, I'm eager to get this thing going but don't want to take anything apart if it isn't needed :D
