I have a 1979 Mercrusier 120 that the motor runs great in neutral and reverse, but the second you put it in drive the motor cuts off like a it
has been hit by a kill switch. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Mercruiser shuts down in drive

Lower shift cable slider (in the bellhousing) is clogged up, usually from a leaking upper shift-shaft seal....

Thanks for the quick reply, the boat shifts fine into foward, but the motor
shuts down immediately. Could the problem be in the shifter? The motor shuts down just like it has a kill switch.

You have the exact symptoms for what I described. It goes into gear but the engine stalls as it does.... Read up on the theory of operations of the shift interrupter switch. Look in the Adults Only section of the forum.....
