Mercruiser stall, noise, starter failure

Ok, today is one of those days, you want to forget. My 1996 Stingray boat has a 96 Mercruiser with the Alpha 1 outdrive. It does not have fuel injection. It ran fine today for the first hour. I had to tow a boat in because of motor problems. Afterwards, I traveled a couple of minutes and noticed a clicking noise when the engine was acclerated. When I backed off it went away. I then went to slow down to dock and the motor shut off. I then went to crank it, and I heard a terrible noise from the engine. It sounded terrible. Another crank, and all I heard was the starter hum. It's a given about the starter, but is there something going on with the motor. I hope it has not locked up. I had it serviced 2 days prior. It had been properly winterized before being parked for the winter.

In 96 Mercruiser made 4cyl, V6, and V8 engines. Which do you have.
Without hearing what those noises sound like or where they are coming from it's hard to say. Could be a starter or a broken rod jammed in the block causing the starter to not turn.

Welcome to iboats! :) Like Don says, the # of cylinders would be helpful...
First, I would pull the plugs & see if it will turn over at all with a socket & breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt....
Any signs of water in the cylinders?
Next I would pull the valve covers & visuallly inspect the rocker arms & push rod area.....JK

Re: Mercruiser stall, noise, starter failure

Thanks everyone for your replies. The motor is a 6 cyl, (4.3). The boat will be going back to the mechanic on Monday. I hope it is not a rod, but my gut tells me that what I heard would be about in line with that thought. Oh well, this would of course continue to provide substantial evidence to my wife that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water that you throw money into..... I will let everyone know how this plays out. Anyone want to make bets?

Worst Case Senario I see is,.......

That Clicking Noise was Detonation..........

Your Starter is Fine,............ The Pistons are Trashed............ :(

Sounds like the plastic gear in the starter broke loose, after the engine locked up,,,, rod, or valve, either are deadly

Re: Mercruiser stall, noise, starter failure

We just bought a used boat and after the first outing at time to pull out of the water the motor stalled and I could not get it started again. At home I pour fuel on in the carb and it started. Once gas was burned of it stalled again. Any help would be appriciated. Down and out in the low country
Thanks

Re: Mercruiser stall, noise, starter failure

I'll bet the starter engaged, got jammed up, the starter pinion got trashed and the humming was the pinion now missing.

I hope I win for your sake, because that would be the cheapest of all of the guesses so far ;)

Welcome aboard jawar,

I would suggest that you start a new topic and include the brand and type of drive and engine size, etc. Your problem sounds like a fuel pump issue but we have no idea what you have, whether it is electric or mechanical, etc. No info to go on really.

You will get great advice here, but the greatness is directly proportional to the info you provide.

Change the fuel filter first. Dump it into a container and see if its got a bunch of junk or water in there. If it does, thats probably your issue. If it still won't fire, check the filter on the side of the carb (if equipped), and you may need to open up the carb to clean it. I've also been able to cheat before and just turn the carb upside-down over a catch pan and dump the water and dirt out. Rare this actually works properly, but sometimes you get lucky.
