I have a 1986 2.5 litre OMC Cobra Complete Unit with a 4 cyl chevy with hardly any hours on the whole unit.It runs great Problem is the hull of the boat that it is currently in is shot.
I Have found a perfect hull with out a motor or outdrive in it but it was a 4 cyln Chevy with a merc outdrive.
How much of a problem would it be to put the good chevy/cobra in a hull
that had a merc out drive?
I am concerned about the cut out and hole locations in the tramsom

Any help would be appreciated greatly!

Should bolt in with no problem. Cutout is the same, including bolt holes.
Hope you also have the throttle and shift control. Different kinds of cables.

Re: Mercruiser To OMC Cobra Swap

Howdy,

I didn't have any problem swapping out the "Wonderful High Tech " King Kobra 460 and installing a 454 Bravo.

You may have to relocate where your front engine mounts go. I filled the old holes with a marine epoxy/milled fiberglass mix and re-drilled them. I did have to make a wood spacer on one side to get the engine mount height correct.

Also, Check your transom over VERY closely. Those high quality Four Winns people didn't bother to seal the area under the transom very well where the drain is. Any water /oil was able to migrate into the gap between the transom wood and the fiberglass in the bottom of the boat. I spent 3 months drying that out and filling the gap down there with epoxy/fiber glass mix. Here's a couple of before and after pictures..

The Cobra hole was was very haphazardly cut. I had to clean that up too and of course since I was installing a Bravo I needed to drill a couple of extra holes up-top. The rest of the holes matched up perfectly.

I probably went overboard....If I had paid someone to do this it probably would have cost a fortune!
