Finally found the lower vent plug! It's on the right side of the upper gear box and "THE BOLT IS TWISTED OFF!!!!!!!!" Just more of my luck. Don't really perceive it to big a big problem though. I'm just going to leave it there, drop down about 1/2" and drill and tap new hole. Ron

if that's a pic of the vent screw. i don't think it is. my 1 drive vent screw is on the other side. up a shade higher. it's the vent hole. the other hole is the drain and fill hole. it's on the bottom of the bullet in ft. on the port side. i don't know what that is in the pic. i think it just leads to a void behind the shift cable slide though..... if ya need pics. i can put them up for ya on my 75 1 drive. yers is newer but looks pretty similar to mine.... btw. mighty sweet weld job.... glad that worked out for ya....

I've already verified that it is the vent hole. The lower oil passage hole mates up with this vent passage, when mated together. I blew air into the lowers fill hole and air comes out the mateing suface. There is no vent hole in the lower unit and it passes up the the upper where is dead ends into the twisted off bolt. I'm still not 100% sure what model/series of Type I that I have! Ron

Re: Mercruiser Type I Lower "Woooooes"

Have'nt done any drilling yet! Here's pic of my outdrive. When I stick my hand up into the upper cavity it feels like a worm tunnel going up to the steel twiest off piece of metal in the hole and the tunnel dead ends at that piece. What do you think Ziggy? Ron

Ooooops! I stand corrected! I just went out to stick my hand up there again and that oil tunnel keeps on going up into the upper! Sorry! There is an o-ring between the lower and the upper and does go into the lower drive shaft. Now what? Am I back to looking for the vent fill hole? On the left side of the upper the lube line goes to a quart resevoir bolted to the inside of the transom.

Thanks again FreeBeeTony for that really great Merc site link. It appears that mine is a Model 470 Outdrive with a Pre-Alpha lower. Ron

Re: Mercruiser Type I Lower "Woooooes"

Hey Ron,

Your VENT hole has the hose of the oil monitor bottle in it... Please don't drill anything... Just disconnect the hose at the leg and fill as normal... Then put the hose back in...

To give you a full description of what you have.... For the drive you have an MC-1 (some call them model 1, or type 1) upper housing (correctly called 'Drive shaft housing'), and an 'R' lower (correctly called the 'Gear housing'). The R gear housings were only 1983 and 1984...

If you can find a serial number on the driveshaft housing (I love being able to use the right names for things :D) we can come close to a year for that...

You have been working on the leg, but what about the engine? You've got us all curious now... after saying '470'....

Re: Mercruiser Type I Lower "Woooooes"

Acording to my outdrive serial number 6165598 I have a model 470. My engine is a Merc 288, 305 V8. She really purrs like a kitten now. I replaced the carb, fuel pump, water pump, alternator and rebuilt the distributor. She really runs sweet! Also replaced whole tilt/trim assembly including the mounting bracket. Can see my restoration over in the Restoration Forum under "1982 GW Project." Glad I was'nt in a big hurry to drill! LoL Thanks guys!!!! Here's old engine pic. Ron

Oh, I forgot to ask, "Is the drive shaft and gear housings using the same lube?

Re: Mercruiser Type I Lower "Woooooes"

SWEEEEET!!! I have a soft spot for the old 305s...

Ok, down to business... I put the leg serial number in the parts program and it came up as a 1982, MC-1, 1.50:1... all the right things!:D Nothing to do with a 470... Who told you that?

Have you got the engine serial number handy?

Maybe you could set them up in your signature, like mine... Then when you post questions, you don't have to remember to put all the details in the post... it falls there automatically :D

If you love your baby, and let's face it, who here doesn't :D, use Mercury High Performance Gear Oil... same for both housings, as they are connected together... Remove the drain screw, at the bottom of the gear housing, and the oil monitor bottle hose from the driveshaft housing, then push the oil into the gear housing until it starts coming out of the vent hole in the driveshaft housing. Put the screw back in the bottom, the hose back in the top and fill the monitor bottle... job done:D

Re: Mercruiser Type I Lower "Woooooes"

I got it from the link thats listed above by FreeBeeTony. Under "Which outdrive do I have" at the bottom there is a table of serial number to model. It has all the serial number listed and that is what it said but was for "1983." My engine serial number will have to be posted tomorrow cause it's dark and raining outside. Ron
