Mercruiser 3.0 Alpha One SN 2770087 A preface on skill level. I am just learning to work on my own boat. I have basic car repair skills because my dad was a motorhead and he said being a girl was no excuse not to know how to fix a car.

The history

Replaced a bad distributor with a used good one out of a running boat.
Got everything back together and could not get a spark off of the coil. Kind neighbor took me through how to test the coil. Tested fine.

Some research later I decide replacing the points and condenser like I intended anyway was a good place to start. But she still cranks but won’t start.

I go back through all my connections. Re check my gap and all the wiring. Notice that the wires connected at the points are a bit loose and slightly corroded. Sand and tighten up that connection and she fires up and runs. Not idling perfectly but figure that’s just timing but it’s getting late and mosquitoes are here. So will time it tomorrow.

When I get back to it I notice there is a crack in the distributor cap that came with the used distributor. At the time thinking it’s just old and brittle and I had picked one up just in case so I swap them out. Making sure to label and place the wires correctly. After that it was hard to start but got it started once and it ran rough for about 5 minutes but only at a high idle which wasn’t unusual, it’s always taken a while to warm up. But it’s really rough. Then it suddenly belched smoke a few times and died. After that it won’t start but will crank. Just more belching. Only change between running and not at this point is a new distributor cap and 12 hours time. Was I given an incorrect cap. Could there be another intermittent issue? This new cap has no positive seat and could be installed 180 degrees off but I would not think it would start if that were the case but maybe I’m wrong.

I would recheck wiring to make sure everything is going to the right place - wires run from the correct post on the cap to the correct spark plug. Check your coil wire. Check that the distributor is installed to the right orientation with cylinder 1 at top dead center so you can set timing from a proper base position.

I’d also reset the carb to a base factory starting point. I mean reset the idle needle to whatever is the proper number of turns to have it at initially, check choke operation & opening gaps, etc. Probably checking float level & needle would be good too.

Yes gender is no excuse for not knowing something, if you want to know it.

Agree with the above, I’d go back through the distributor installation and make sure it is correctly positioned with the #1 cylinder at TDC.

Perhaps u didn't need a distributor cap in the first place. What were symptoms before u replaced cap? "Mercruiser Won’t Run After New Distributor Cap," implies that it was working before replacement? If so, was the replacement for a general tune-up or what was the reason for replacement? Perhaps cap in not seated well? Most have a key-way, but not always... Download MC manuals. You are going to need them, anyway. If motor coughs, but it was running before cap replacement, it sounds like a misalignment of cap that is throwing timing ignition off just a bit. Or, perhaps u replaced spark plug wires incorrectly. Or, perhaps u moved distributor just enough to cause issues. Is it tight? If distributor is tight, don't move it!

Find a manual first of all...
Set the point gap to .016"(pretty standard) and ensure that when you're TDC on #1...

Don't worry about dwell...but make sure you're gapping the points while on the apex of the dizzy cam lobe. Just a little off will make a BIG difference. Ensure the points are given a quick swipe with a file or a piece of cardboard to clean the faces.

Make sure your rotor is FULLY seated onto the dizzy shaft as well. If it's too high it will not be able to fire correctly across to the cap buttons.

Do NOT mess with the carb until you have the ignition figured out...one piece at a time!
