I own a 1980 140 mercruizer. today after raising the tilt (outdrive) It would not go back down by pushing the button even though the electric pump motor was working. After placing it in gear, it went down very slowly and took about 6 minutes( from the pressure of the prop turning?). So in a few words it goes up but will not come down even though the pump motor is working. Is this easy to fix if i take the pump apart and try to see what is broke? I also checked the oil in the pump, it is up to the top of the fill screw hole. Please help.... I have a tournament soon!! thanks -adam

also while pushing the down button the pump sounds like it does not have a presurized load as compared to comming up please help... could there be air in the line?

Disconnect the lines from the pump and see if the drive will go down, if it does, you have a pump problem, if it doesn't the trim cylinders are binding somewhere.

Re: mercruizer trim/tilt problems

thank you don, before i read your responce i took it upon myself to unbolt the hydrolic cylinders both will push the drive upwards but one will not go down. I have a parts boat that I can get the parts from. one last question the one that does go down seems weak is it plausable that it is going bad also? it takes about 4 minutes to go down the whole way. thanks again!!

That should take less than 30 seconds. To verify its the pump you can switch the hydraulic lines and see if the problem follows.
