Mercruser 3.0 alpha one

I have an 1988 regal with mercruser 3.0 alpha one. My question I went to dewinter rose the boat and with ear muffs. The water was coming out all over found that the the exhaust bellow was not connected. I bout new one put it on put ear muffs on water was coming out different places. Isn't the water suppose to come out were the prop is?

Most of the water will come out the idle bypass ports.
