Just bought 1975 Sey Ray Runabout SRV-190, it is leaking water out of port side(left) of engine bad. Since I'm am new to boats, but not engines could some one please maybe give me an idea of what this could be from, over heats in about five mins. Thanks for any help, mike. I have found that plate for holes has rusted out and this is were water is coming from, any idea of cost of repairs?

Re: mercrusier 188hp v8 leaks

Welcome to Iboats, Mike.

1st and most obvious, check and see if anyone left a drain plug out of the bottom of the port side manifold. Feel around underneath it and of there is a hole..there is your problem.

2nd..try to pinpoint WHERE the water is coming from. Is it leaking alongside the engine, or pouring out of the manifold and not touching the engine? That simple difference can point you in the right direction for sure. Start there.

Ayuh,... With All the info provided,... I'd guess you've probably got a Cracked block...
Can't see it from here though...

thanks for the help you guys, the leak seems to be comeing out of the holes of where the exhaust manifold for a reg. car would be, it has not been in water yet just using muffs, any other thoughts would help, about ready to sell for junk, thanks mike

Partner, you need to be more specific. The exhaust manifolds on your engine are cooled by water that is brought in from your outdrive (the muffs) and exits throught the exhaust manifold/risers through the exhaust. There are several draining points that you use to let water out of the manifolds in the winter to keep the water from freezing inside and cracking the manifold/engine block.

Many times, there is what's known as a "petcock" on these drain holes which can be turned like a screw or bolt to open/close the valve. There is a good chance that the valve was left open during winterization and is spewing a stream of water out. Look at the manifold and the riser (big black thing on top and back of manifold) to find the petcocks and turn them clockwise to ensure they are closed.

IF you don't know the correct name for things, pictures would be a big help.

I agree with "haul". Petcock left open.

Re: mercrusier 188hp v8 leaks

I have posted pic of problem in original post, seems there is a plate on the inside that has rusted out, poked finger thru plate in rusted area on other side(starburt) and water started coming out of other side. Is this worth trying to repair on a boat this old or should I just sell for parts? thanks for all your help, sorry from the rookie in me. P.S. all petcocks are closed.

Partner, those holes are in the block, not the exhaust manifold. Those holes are where brass "freeze plugs" should be installed. You can buy some freeze plugs and install them, although it can sometimes be a bear to do with the engine in. They also make rubber plugs you can tighten into the holes that will usually work. Freeze plugs can be tapped into place, and normally only run about $1-2 per plug. There are 3 freeze plugs per side of the block.

The downside is that normally freeze plugs don't pop out unless the water in the block froze, which usually means a cracked block. Perhaps the PO pulled the freeze plugs as part of his winterization process, but it's a long shot. Hopefully you can get the freeze plugs in, run the engine, and not have water in the oil indicating a cracked block.

If they rusted out, someone used steel auto ones.
