Wellcraft 1987, 5.7L merc. turn the key and starter slave solinoid clicks but starter won't go, turn key a couple of times then starter goes, starter solinoid or slave solinoid? All wire connections have just been cleaned pos. and neg. all 1,000 of them.

What happens when you put a screwdriver across the large terminals of the slave solenoid? Engine turns over but it won't with the key?

If so, then it's that.

He's just trying to spin the starter, not fire the motor.

(I mean yeah.. he'd like to start the motor, obviously.. but the problem at hand is the starter. Re-read the OP :D)

I would think he wants the starter to crank the engine over, not just make noise while the starter motor spins. The solenoid could be inoperative and your test would spin the starter.
The solenoid has to work in order to engage the bendix into the flywheel.

That's why I'm telling him to test this: KBk6o.jpg

..and not this: wolthuis.aspx?e=0&src=images%u00252fproduct%2fmedium%2f2285_3_.jpg

Is that wrong? Any time that I've ever had a starting issue, the simplest way to see if it's the starter or the slave is to pop a screw driver across those terminals.. after all battery connections are checked and re-checked. If the motor turns right over with no problem, it's the slave. If the starter just clicks or still won't go, it's the starter. Done deal.

If the motor turns right over with no problem, it's the slave.

Or a problem upstream of the slave (no power from the ignition to energize the slave) could do this as well, right?

He has a click, so some power is getting through. Maybe not enough voltage to engage the solenoid (Corrosion/loose connections will do that).
