I am a novice boat owner and have a problem... I had my 1991 boat with Mercruiser Alpha One 3.0 I/O winterized last year and de-winterized last week by the same marina. When I went to put hte boat in the water, I realized that they didn't put the drain plug in, so the engine was partially submerged for a few minutes!

The boat will not start now. I have two batteries and each time I try and start the boat it drains the battery. I bought a new battery and it dies when I try and start it a few times.

The boat did start on Saturday and I idled it for about 1/2 hour. When I put the boat in reverse it died immediately, then never started again.

I know the marina will ultimately be responsbile, but am I looking at a huge problem or likely something simple? Thanks!

try removing all the plugs and crank the motor. You may have water in some cylinders. It will sound just like a dead battery.A very slow crank or no crank at all is what it can sound like. You may also see some watercome out of the plug holes. CC

The boat did idle fine and turned over a half dozen times when it did get it started on Saturday. But when I put it in reverse that is when it died and never started again. I appreciate everyone's quick responses!

Sorry, but I find it hard to believe that the marina is at fault because there was no plug in the boat. That's something everyone has done at one time or another. That aside, the boat probably needs to be run. If you paid the marina to get it ready for the season and it wont run, I'd talk to them.

bowhuntr

If you submerged only part of the motor, it is usually only the starter that gets ruined. You cant't hurt the motor till you submerge the carb. The starter may be dragging or locked up and will just drain the batt. I would look there first. Also the boat plug is your problem, not theirs.
