Mercruzer throttle question

Hey everyone
The other day I was coming in to dock my boat and when I went to put it in neutral it make a weird sound almost like when you try to start an engine that is already running. Once I shut the engine off and re-started it was fine. This is the second time this has happened. I thought the throttle works off a cable, not electronic. My boat is a 1988 Cadorett with a 130hp 3L. it does operate on a cable, but the movement in the control box, may be shorting a wire,

I have a friend that is new to boating (with a brand new boat) that was having the same issue. Everytime I would drive the boat---no issues. I ended up telling her it obviousley was operator error of some sort. lol

Well, she told me yesterday that it was because when she was turning the key to start the boat, it was sticking and leaving the starter engaged. The sloution is simple, after turning the key to start boat, make sure to turn the key back to "on" mode and ensure not stuck in start mode. They tend to stick due to resistance created by the rubber cap that keeps water out of the switch.

On my boat yesterday, I noticed that my key would also stick with the starter engaged unless I turn it back-----I guess I have just always done it automatically.

The same thing happened to me and my wife. We just purchased our first new boat, glastron gt 185. We're kind of new to boating. Right after starting the boat, taking it off the trailer and putting the throttle in nuetral (straight up) we would hear a grinding kind of noise. It was almost like trying to start a car that was already running. We finally found out it was the key was sticking when the boat was started and not put back to the "ON" position. The starter was left engaged but would only make noise when the throttle shifter was in the straight up position.
