Hello, new poster here, but I've been reading this forum for month's. the issue I'm having is on my 3.0 GM (SN 0C856989 ), the DST distributor trigger coil is open. I have a new coil on it's way. I'm not sure how it's changed. The Mercuriser Electrical Manual makes no mention how this part is changed. The "Star Wheel" that has the teeth that breaks the magnetic field looks like it's fixed to the distributor shaft. See # 7 on the Picture

it looks like I need to pull the distributor, remove the drive gear, & pop out the shaft. Next, swap the coil out and reassemble. This seems like a long way to do this. Am I missing something? Any Help would be appreciated, Thanks

Regards, Moose

Yes, you have to remove the distributor, and remove the shaft from the distributor. That's how it's done.
The Merc manuals give no information on the replacement. Here is a couple pages from a Volvo manual on how to replace it.

Re: Mercuriser 3.0 DST Distributor Trigger Coil replacement

Don S., You are as aways, the man! Thanks that was what I needed to know.

My boat is apparently an early DST and the wiring doesn't match the diagram in Service Manual 26. My engine's DST 2nd (4 Pin) plug is not wired to the shift cutout switch & doesn't have the two wires to connect for timing. I'm guessing the shift cutout is wired like the point style ignition. There is one black (Maybe w/ green tracer?) wire hanging from that plug, not sure what that wire is supposed to be for. I will have to find / make an ignation test timing plug for when I get the trigger replaced & the distributor re-installed. :D Thanks again, Moose

First of all, it's EST, not DST. Second, your engine is a 1990, manual 26 if for 1998 to 2008 engines. You should be looking at manual 13.

My engine's DST 2nd (4 Pin) plug is not wired to the shift cutout switch & doesn't have the two wires to connect for timing.

That is strange, because from the earliest EST's to today's, were all wired to the shift interrupt switch the same way.

Might want to post some pictures of your wiring setup, there are no black striped wires on that ignition system, for any year.

Don, Here's the Photos of the timing wire. It Plugs into my EST's ignition module. It does not have the two wires to short together, not even the female pins. Where can I get that Volvo Penta Tool; 885163 (Initial Timing Connector)? Regards, Moose

You don't need a special tool for a Mercruiser, you just need to follow the manual.

Here is how it's done.
