mercuriser 898 w/ 350 gm

I have a 898 with a 350 gm that tries to start but won't. Have already checked the timing an found it to be good, Any ideas as what could be wrong with it? Also it is a 1979

I thought an 898 meant it was an 8 cylinder 198 h.p. engine which is a 305 2 barrel? If the timing is good and there's spark , it's a fuel problem. Look down your carb. and see if the accelerator pump has fuel. Make sure the choke is set right too.
