after removing the lower unit to check the water<br />pump impeller,which was fine, and after putting it back together, i cant get the motor to open up to high speed. it trolls fine, but no top end?<br /> i noticed this 9.8 merc has a trolling mode lever. how does this work? could i have misaligned something when i put it back together?<br /> wish i had a diagram on how this all works.<br /> any help is appreciated. :confused:

The troll lever is so you can tilt up the motor for shallow water running.<br /> Check the butterfly in the carb and make sure its opening fully...<br />Regards Jon

Also check fuel lines, fuel pump and make sure tank is vented. You may need to do a link & synk.<br />Do you have a manual?

It's possible that the shift rod was misaligned when the unit was reassembled, which would in turn mean you may be in forward gear down below when the upper linkage is only in neutral. This would mean you're running up against the neutral safety stop that normally prevents you from revving the motor up beyond a safe level in neutral...<br /><br />- Scott

thanks for the help.<br /> i know you are right on this...i will take the lower unit back off and try again.<br /> how will i know if i line every thing up right? is there a trick doing this? i never removed a lower unit before.<br /> i need to get her going for the seneca lake fishing derby next saturday.<br /> thanks for your help.<br /> tom

Hi Tom,<br /> I usually align both the upper and lower shifters into neutral (prop spinning freely). Can take some fussing to get it all together, but if it worked okay before and now it doesn't, then that's more than likely the issue. A repetoire of colorful language sometimes helps with these old Mercs, too. :) <br />- Scott

scott,<br /> i will do what you say on the putting her back in the right confiquration. it is pouring rain today so i will do it tomorrow...hope the rain quits soon. the old thunderbolt runs like a top<br />and scoots my 14ft. jon boat pretty fast. and she can also troll right down to where you can hear the firing of each piston. <br /> this summer i plan on fishing for northerns <br />up your way. i love fishing the thousand islands.<br /> tom

the merc is working great now!<br /> after loosening the lower unit and putting gers in neutral...<br /> the motor is back whre she belongs.<br /> thanks for the help :) <br /> tom
