Mercury 1100 Inline 6 breakdown under load after new points installed?

My friend and i are rebuilding an old two stroke ~1970 mercury 1100 inline 6 and all was going well. The points needed replacing as the arm that rubs on the cam was worn so much the points wouldn't open very far even at the maximum of their adjustment. So after replacing them and setting the timing as we had done before so the engine idled nicely we dropped the boat in the water for some timing adjustments however no amount of adjusting the timing gave the engine enough power to pull a skier out of the water. Previously (before the points change) it worked fine so i am wondering if having the points gap wrong could be the cause of this breakdown or maybe we have done something else wrong?? Also, if it is the points do they nee to be closer or further apart? Should they be closed for longer than they are open or should they only be closed for an instant?

thanx for any help.

If possible set the pts with a dwell plate, is very important, also the pt spring tension is important--Bob

if you find where to get this dwell plate post it please, this is the problem I am working on as I have found you dont set the points exactly ( you set the dwell )if you have a manual as I do it is what it calls for. I was working on this today and I have a manual for your year also. I could post the instructions for you also.
(Thanks Mudrow)

Is this an 1100 SS or conventional 2 coil ignition? And any 1100 with points was 1966 - ONLY.

-W

Mercury only built 1100 in 1966/67

You can download a copy from John's Old Mercury website and make your own dwell and sync plate.

go to oldmercs.com and go to related links and you can find johns old merc. and dwell plate is there. for the pointer use some kind of heavy wire that you can bend around a socket and have it come straight out from the center of the shaft. find a socket that will fit snug around the rotor mount shaft and cut the slots with a file and remember that they are off center and this will work for the pointer and you can set dwell pretty easy.

thanx for all the replys, ok, first up, when i stated what year the engine was it was a ballpark figure as the serial number is yet to be found on this engine and it seems to be a combination of more than one, anywayz, it has a two coil ignition. As for setting the dwell angle, what should it be set to? I have fiddled with the point gap as much as i can but the probelm still remains... no power.

I looked up the dwell plate diagram on johns old website, how do i actually use this? Ie, where do i put it, it looks like it sits under the flywheel? Also, where is this indicating arm?

You have to remove the dist, then fasten the plate to the bottom of the dist if you make a plate you need to make a arm to clamp to the dist shaft to reach out to the plate to use as a indicator, it also sounds like you need a manual---Bob

look at he dwell plate real good. this is not hard. read mudrows post above. the dist. has to fire on three cyclinders with one point arm and the other arm the other three cyclinders and they will be three per revolution on each arm. all dwell is is the timing between one point opening and closing and the other point opening and closing. Good luck

The object of the plate is, yes to set dwell on the first set of pts properly, but the most important thing it does is to allow you to sync. the second set of pts. to the first
