Your engine is a 1977 Canadian built engine and someone needs to redo the fuel system as you say it ran before.

It might not hurt to rebuild the fuel pumps too. There as important as the carbs, if not more so. If there is back bleeding, the motor will perform....so so.

Let's see, if the bulb won't go hard what could it be...

no fuel to bulb

reversed bulb

bad bulb including it's internal check valves

leak in engine fuel system

pump

lines

carbs

.....

If it will not get hard but is pumping, then likely the bulb is bad or the fuel is going someplace....or you are pumping it really hard. Take the plug out of a carb bowl and see if it has fuel, if it pumps out. Usually have to choke these hard with the idle all the way up to get them to fire up. They start harder if tilted up, when cold.

If you take a line off a carb and spin the starter it should pump out if pump on motor is working. Don't start a fire! That pump is pretty cheap/easy to rebuild. Note if your bulb goes bad it can fill the pump with rubber bits.

Re: mercury 115/1150 6cyl thunderbolt

We can only offer advice, mercs really require top fuel performence, if something is wrong, then they don't run right. IF the fuel system is perfect, then, then why is the gas flowing out the carbs, and the ball won't get hard?
If the fuel pump is fine, then revist the carb rebuild, are the floats set right? There is something amis somewhere. On my 1961 merc 800, the bulb gets so hard, I almost have to use two hands to squeeze fuel out of the carbs. By squeezing that hard I can push fuel out, but once my ball is hard, it stays that way too. No bleed down either.

FB, everthing is perfect except for gas squirting out and it won't run.

Re: mercury 115/1150 6cyl thunderbolt

That is the way these old inline Mercs are, if you squeeze the bulb really hard the carb float will overflow into the carb. If you just rebuilt them you might not be able to make them do it. If they are not working right the fuel will come out easily. Most people force the bulb like that for a cold start because the choke does not work that well being only on 4 cylinders. It works like a primer if you force it and starts faster, of course you need to trim the motor down so the gas runs into the motor not out of the carb. I could not get mine to do it after I went through the carbs and never ran it before that.

I would take the floats back out and reset/inspect them, check the filters, etc.

Re: mercury 115/1150 6cyl thunderbolt

I have an mercury 115hp from 1984, (brown label), I rebuilt the intire motor over the winter, removed the idel-stabiliser (due to faulty fungtion), added ower size main jets in carburator (0,082), retarded the WOT ignition point with 1-2 dg. and got my motor runnig fine and fitting todays fuel.
Standard setup DO NOT WORK.
