Ok, i brought my 77 merc 115 to the lacal merc mechanic to check the timing i set and a few other things. It started pretty easy when it was cold before i brought to him. Now it will not turn over when it is cold unless i give it a lil shot of starting fluid. If you let it sit for more then a minute after running it will not restart. He also said i did something to the carbs because one was leaking.

Re: mercury 115 cold start

i would be really careful using starting fluid. by really careful i mean i wouldn't use it. if you must spray something in you should use mixed gas in a spray bottle. the starting fluid can hurt do to its lack of lubrication. it sounds like on of you needles is sticking in the carbs. i just rebuilt mine and found that the rubber tip on the needle had broken off on one and another looked as if it had pushed out the rubber tip and was about to break off. i am not sure if this is an ethanol related problem or not. it happened to me in a similar manner. everything was ok except for gas leaking from carb when i primed the bulb then progressed to no start. i rebuilt the carbs and everything was fine again.

Yeah, it does seem like its starving for fuel because it wants to turn over then just backfire a little bit. The more i try to turn over the softer the primer ball gets.

Make sure the carbs shutters are closing when you try to choke the motor during cold start. Other than that, we need more details on what he touched.

Sounds like you need to become a better mechanic, and skip the other guy. A lot of mechanics do not know how to service those oil Mercs.

have you checked your spark? i would pull my plugs and see if they are showing signs of fouling from lack of spark or if they are wet from flooding. the carb rebuild sounds like it is a must with the fuel leaking. the spark check is due to the backfire. good luck.

Re: mercury 115 cold start

Well I am just learning on this motor and wanted him to double check on my max spark advance setting. I didnt want to take the chance of burning the motor up. After all i had it set correct, but now i have a whole nother issue.
