I have a 2002 Merc 115 EFI 4 stroke. I used it this year twice when I went to check the level of my engine oil I noticed the dip stick had white streaks in it. I drained a little of the engine oil and it first came out milky white then normal color. I could of swear I seen pure water first come out though is this possible. It runs fine and I am using the recommended quick silver 10w 30
oil. Any help would be apprciated.

Hi Tucker. First of all, welcome to iboats. Second, drain the rest of that oil right away. You don't want that water sitting in the engine. A few questions. Is this the 1st time you have checked the oil this season? Did you change the oil when you winterized it last Fall? Did you check it after your last time out and was it normal then? Have you overheated your engine or had any other mechanical problem recently? Any unusual noises? When was the last time you had it serviced? Do you run in salt or fresh water? Let us know. :)

Re: Mercury 115 EFI 4 STROKE OB

Hi Drowned Rat,

I changed the oil last fall. I used it only once this year, last weekend. It seems to run fine. I only happened on this because I wanted to check the oil level on the dip stick. I mean its not pure white by any means it just seems whiter then it should. I run in fresh water but the engine I think has seen salt. One other note when I brought it outr for the first time this year the alarm went off for a few seconds intermitent beeping !! But it shut off after a few seconds.

Your '02 Merc. should still be under warranty.

I'd run it down to a factory authorized repair shop and have it checked out.

PS. Save the oil if you change before having it looked at. They might want to have it analyzed.

Good luck...

It looks like it was condensation from the winter. I changed the engine oil twice with one filter change and it cleaned it up pretty good. Somthing for all you 4 stokers to think about??

Welcome aboard!!

Just a quick question about the water that came out of the oil sump. How much was there? If there was a couple of tablespoons, no worries. More than a cup of water whent he oil is drained would indicate an internal leak.

Make sure when you are running the engine that you are warming it up completely. Proper operating temperatures will evaporate the condensed water in the sump. We see water in the oil alot up north here where the water temps after ice out are around the 35 - 40 degree mark.

Good luck!

It was a couple of table spoons my estimate. I was pike fishing after ice out, The air temperature was 27 f and water temp was 38 f. The water was right at the bottom of the sump. I should of taken a digitl picture of it. I talked with a few marinas and they said to change it a couple of times which I did. I plan on running it this weekend. That will be the real test. I am confident that it was condensation. I am interested of any other owners of 4 stroks had this problem. You really would not find it unless you happend to drain a little oil from the plug.
