Hi guys, thought I'd finally join up instead of lurking in the shadows and request some advice.

I have a 1979 Merc 115 with tilt. Been having tilt issues for quite some time, if boat sits for a week or so and tilt isn't used then next time I try the tilt will just click and nothing. A few taps with a hammer generally fixes it. This time its been a month and no matter how much "tapping" I gave it there is nothing but clicking. Has Fluid, Has Plenty of charge - I'm guessing being made in 79, there is a good chance she's had it. All I can see on the tilt motor is "HYC-5109"

My questions are:

1: Would it be worthwhile pulling the tilt motor out and stripping it down and cleaning it all out then pop back together and see if its just dirty?

2: If I was to replace the tilt motor, do I have to find the exact same one, or is there a generic type one I can use?

Cheers
Danny

1st clean all trim wiring/connections including grounds, then try again. If it is the motor there should be a replacement available.Post pic if possible.Im guessing you have a 3 ram system with 2 or 3 wire motor?

Not great photo's but best I could do without taking it entirely out of boat at this stage. Cleaned all connections last time it did it and tested with multimeter and all seem fine. Will do again just to be sure.

I had same problem with a unit from a 79 last week, had to tap motor with hammer. Took motor apart, cleaned, reassembled working perfectly now.

Have you verified power getting to the motor from solenoids? Motor ground is good?
There is no generic motor, the motor is still available from merc and comes with the reservoir, but is pricey $600-700.

To remove motor, drain reservoir, remove valve and pump from bottom of reservoir. Remove end cap screws and remove motor assembly, the end cap will not come free from field housing, due to soldered wires. Clean everything, check brushes. The brushes are still available. To reassemble, install armature, install field housing and end cap, you will need to make up a tool to hold brushes while slipping end cap over end of armature. I had a wrench from a die grinder that worked to hold brushes back. You can test motor at this point without installing pump. If everything good, reassemble pump and valve, fill with oil and bleed.

I've attached page from manual with picture of tool to hold brushes.

Re: Mercury 115hp 1979 Tilt issues

Hopefully a good cleaning will fix it up. There is an aftermarket motor avail, if you need it. It comes with upper resevoir. I think it is made by ARCO. It is very important that you bring the original to the store and match up the replacement motor. The armatures may be a different length, and won't work. The armature on the new motor must stick out from the bottom of the resevoir, the exact same amount as the original motor.
