mercury 125hp lower unit compatability

I have a 2001 mercury 125 with a bad lower unit and I would like to replace it with a good lower unit from a 1997 125. I can't seem to find anything that says what the difference between the two would be. Can someone tell me if this will work? Thanks.

Sorry will not fit as the 1987-97 units are a 3 jaw clutch and the 1998-06 units are a 6 jaw and shift linkage and rod are different. You can use a 6 jaw inplace of a 3 jaw but have to udate linkage.
