I have 1991 merc 135hp with no spark on RH coil LH is fine. I swapped coils no change. If i put in netural and full throttle i get one or two sparks. IT only acts like this at idle, at speeds motor runs great and plugs look good. Also motor seems to spin over real easy. THANKS

Bill, it is a V/6? We need to know which cyls do and don't have spark

Re: mercury 135hp spark

switchbox. My 91 135 is doing the same thing but I haven't fixed it yet. I have ohmed the stator and it seems fine. I have a miss on 2 cylinders on the right bank(as seen from front of motor)at low rpm's, runs good at high throttle. I played around with some old boxes that I replaced on the other motor(twins) and they would work ok for a day or two. If you replace I recommend Buy new. It seems that these switchboxes act differently when moved from motor to motor.

It is v6 and #1,#3 and #5 cyls on right hand side looking from back. What did you mean by switchbox? Is it the two power packs that the coil wires go to on the RH side of motor?

Re: mercury 135hp spark

The switchboxes are located on that side as you described. There are two of them(one located under the other)
The ignition system consist of these basic components. Flywheel, Stator, trigger, switchboxs, and coils. Stator and trigger are located under the flywheel( the timing advance is attached to the trigger)
----------------------------------------------
This ignition system is plit into 2 induvidual sections (well, almost)
1)one section of the stator and 1 switchbox drives one bank of cylinders and the same applies to the other side, or bank.
---------------------------------------------
2)The trigger has three sections, or coils(like the coils in an alternator), with six wires that service both switchboxes. Each trigger section(or coil) services one cylinder on each switchbox, hence the two wires per section
---------------------------------------------
You really need a book to explain this and unravel the color code of the wire system.
---------------------------------------------
Signals from the stator and trigger come together in the switchboxes and this sets the timing and provides the fire signal for the cylinder coils. A bad stator will cause your problem and you should ohm out the stator, and trigger just because, as per instructions in the manual. Trigger will cause you to loose one cylinder on each side.
-----------------------------------------------
Don't try to crank motor with switchboxes ungrounded. you can see the ground wires connected to the bottom of each box. You may have a bad ground that is just loose.
------------------------------------------------
You may want to try and swap places with the switchboxes and see if the problem moves with the box. Didn't work for me on mine but 2 new switchboxes sure solved the problem. My motors are strange anyways, or should I say plagued.
----------------------------------------------
Hope this helps. how much fuel does your motor use anyways? what size boat? Do a search on 91 135 and look at my post on here.

Re: mercury 135hp spark

Hi mike....I tried switching the two power packs around but did not make any difference still no spark. On the top row i have power on both of them accept at the white wire. Those wire lead up to the flywheel. There is another harness coming from flywheel going to packs, i do not have power on either one of the packs while cranking. I hate to spend $175.00 EA. for packs and not be it.

Re: mercury 135hp spark

Your test indicates that the switchboxes are probably ok.
So try this for a stator check... Switch the stator leads going to each box... They connect at the top (2 leads for each box).... Red & Blue on one box, and Red/white & Blue/white on the other... Switch them from one box to the other...

Now you are switching the imput voltage leads... See if the condition moves to the other bank of cylinders...

Let us know

Re: mercury 135hp spark

I switch the wires around from one box to the other and know i have spark on the right side and not the left. So does that mean a bad stator? If so is that something i can change or does need to go to dealer? THANKS

Re: mercury 135hp spark

Yes, that means that the stator is the problem and also confirms that the switchboxes are ok...

Shouldn't be that hard to replace.. Just need a flywheel puller...

Re: mercury 135hp spark

I like to THANK everyone for the help.... The only question i have if i find a puller is there anything that needs to be timed when i get back together. I had just put a stator in it about three or four years ago do they go out that often????????? Who do you recomend for a stator? THANKS AGAIN..........

Re: mercury 135hp spark

http://www.seilermarine.com/

It will be a CDI/Rapair stator....

They shouldn't go out that often, but it can happen as fellow posters have reported in the past...

No timing required, it's just a remove, bolt on job. (get the manual though) The flywheel removal is the toughest part, but shouldn't be that tough if you have the merc puller for that engine...Don't mess with the trigger which is right there with the stator, otherwise it is a timing job... The manual will show you the ropes...

good to hear you got it running. Looks like I'll be replacing some parts pretty soon. I keep loosing a bank from time to time.

Re: mercury 135hp spark

No troubles. Seilermarine great to work with $155.00 for the part and free freight. I did bump up to 2nd day air only $13.00. The new stator looks very nice over the O.E.PART.
THANKS AGAIN.......
