Re: Mercury 1400 question

Thanks Chris. Do you have a cable clamp? Where the shifter and throttle cable clamp to the motor. Very brittle, mine broke when I clamped it down, and again when I tried to tap out the pin. I have it "fixed" with a plastic wedge and a cable tie. It is a quick fix and I suppose I should take a pic and post it in case someone else has the same problem. My concern is if it ever broke loose and I lost throttle response while approaching any danger at speed. I just came up with a design that may work as a better fix. Maybe better that original. I'll see if I can fashion one and upload some pics.
Talking to a mechanic and he suggested that the oil could be unburned oil from the exhaust. I'm crossing my fingers, I'll look more into it later.
As for the ignition, I wonder if another marine ignition switch with the same diameter and number of poles would work? Neutral switch is specific to the controls. Gotta be an original. But I'm just making work now as mine works, I'm just looking for perfection.

Re: Mercury 1400 question

So, to update my saga. Changed the gear oil in the lower unit today. Looked good, no water, dark oil, no metal, no burned smelled. I hope the oil I found before was just from the exhaust. Finished the cable clamp, I should start a seperate thread for that. I'll attach a couple pics.
Started a link and sync, finished what I could at home, took it to the lake and it wouldn't start. Starter would spin but not engage the flywheel. Charged the battery and it turned over just fine. No time to go to the lake today, maybe tomorrow. I'm still not sure I have the timing right. I'm not totally sure of the function of some of the adjustment screws. The link and sync calls them one thing and the manual calls them another. I think I understand but I'm not positive.

Gotta go.

Re: Mercury 1400 question

Chris, are you still listening to this thread? I took the boat to the lake with a charged battery it started and still not idling without the idle lever. I think I have things so out of whack I can't get my link ans sync right. If I went to the motor while idling had my daughter move the throttle forward and I turned the distributor it would run up to 5200 rpm. Sounded nice, smooth but if I backed it down and tried again it would bog down and die unless I pulled up the start lever or again turned the dizzy to the right spot. Could the dizzy be stiff and not turning freely? I replaced the rotor shaft and bearing last year, regreased and reassembled. Everything seems to turn smoothly with the linkage. I think I'm doing things right but maybe not. Does this look right for the timing arrow for a '77/'78 inline 140hp?

Well I can't get the pic to upload.

I'll try to reply and see if I can get it to.

Won't let me post a pic. Says it's not valid image file. Tried to post it as I've done with others, IDK.

Ok I think I got it to upload. So does this look like it is lined up correctly?
