I just got a Merc 1400 the startor just spins at the top of the flywheel. I read in the book if the powerhead is tight then the engine wont turn i tried to turn the flywheel manually and it is pretty hard. What does i tight flywheel usually mean? What can i do to make it turn more smoothly? I think its been sitting for about a year.

Re: Mercury 1400

I would start by removing all the plugs and squirting some oil into each cylinder, then turn it over with a wrench and see what happens.

Re: Mercury 1400

***UPDATE*** Thanks for the suggestion. I cleaned the carbs with spray i know that is not cleaning the carbs, i learned that with my motorcycle. Anyways it ALIVE!!!!!! the engine turns on right away the only problem is the idle is pretty bad and it smokes like a freaking oil refinary. I ran it for about 15-20 minutes and the smoke still continued. Could it be the carbs still? Should i take them off? Or can it be something else. Do you think its running to rich or lean? Or are they just dirty as FFFF and need to be rebuild? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Mercury 1400

Smoke is usually the tell tale of a rich mixture. It keeps smoking as heavy as the first couple of seconds it started? That's odd, oh well if it runs...
If it isn't getting bogged down while getting on plane and it isn't stalling at idle, then your carbs are probably clean enough.
-andy

Re: Mercury 1400

It dosent die at all in the idle its pretty rough thou. When i increase the rpms it sounds good but the smoke is way to much. So you think its running rich? Is that just messing with the idle screws?

Re: Mercury 1400

Smoke is usually associated with a too rich of fuel/oil mixture. I have no experience with inlines, but I think the idle mixture controls the fuel/air mixture. Do you premix your fuel and oil (50:1).

Re: Mercury 1400

Another thought. If it is idles poorly, than your air/fuel mixture is probably too high. This has nothing to do with the smoke. On my V6, one of the throttle shutters in one of my carb throats wasn't closing all the way at idle and it would sputter and have a rough idle. Once I made the adjustment it ran fine.

-andy

Re: Mercury 1400

Well i think i did it the right way i pumped 5 or gallons of gas and then i poured in 6.9 onces of oil. I hope this is what you mean by premixing. "air/fuel mixture is probably too high". How would i fix this. I will check the shuters but they seemed fine. I guess i will prob. dismantle the carbs this weekend. Thanks andy i appreciate all your advice. first click and the baby turns on i love it not the smoke thou :)

Re: Mercury 1400

Mixti, The correct ratio of Gas to Oil for that motor is 50::1. Premix 16 oz oil with 6 gal of gas. The ratio you cited is 92.75::1, which is only about 1/2 the oil you should use for that motor.

Mixtli, It would be a good idea to replace your impeller. (Water Pump), Tim

Re: Mercury 1400

Mixti, Easy you just replace the water line from the elbow where it comes out of the head, and then route it up and loop it over the top spark plug and back down out of the tell tale hole. Tim

Re: Mercury 1400

***Update*** Well my baby turns on in a flash i love it. I did buy the seafoam and followed clams intruction on decarbing. I did smoke a lot. Good news it dosent smoke as much as before it does when i rev the engine thou but not on low idle. It stills idles kind of rouph thou. I think i will take it out and run it kind of hard see if stops the smoking. I will try to take a pic of the smoke so you can tell me if it is normal.
