I just bought a 1998 Fish n Ski with a 150 Mercury. I did a compression test before buying it and it tested between 115 and 120 stone cold. I feel good about the engine so I want to keep it perfect. I plan to premix because I don't trust injection systems. Is it necessary to run any special oil? A buddy of mine told me that he runs wal mart brand in his 200 Johnson, says it is OK as long as it has some type of rating.

Also, what ratio should I run?

Ratio is 50 to 1.

As long as the oil is TC-W3 rated you should be good to go.

I use either the synthetic Penzoil or Quicksilver Premium Plus. I think the quicksilver is a synthetic blend. I think they produce less smoke than the regular dino oils, but that is just my opinion, and I have been known to be loud wrong in the past. There are some guys on this board that swear by the Wal-Mart oil. I don't use the Wal-Mart brand because the nearest Wal-Mart is about 30 minutes from my house. I buy the Penzoil from Western Auto, 5 minutes from my house. Also, I got suckered into anything that is synthetic has to be better than the dino juice. ...Mobil 1 in the cars, premium filters, only OEM parts etc. They love to see me come into the parts store to empty my wallet unnecessarily. I think I have an OCD problem with aftermarket parts.

in the old days the recipe would have been 1 quart of 30 wt. non detergent to 5 galons of gas. that all changed with the advent of modern 2 cycle oils. now according to certain manufacturers you could mix to down to 100 to 1. Grand Dad used power punch at 50 to 1 in everything and never had a problem, I believe that it had the bia tcw3 rating, and was a good oil. Today , I would guess that any oil with that rating would be good, and the synthectics are prooving out very well, with less emmissions and better lube qualities. I'm still scared of the 100 to one mixes but know a few people who have used them with success. Not sure about injection systems but think they might have special needs and would check before purchasing. for standard mix in the can, 50 to 1 tcw3 is the way to go
