Hey guys,

I’ve posted here before and you guys were a great help.

So the issues is, I was out on the boat and the boat started to give a pretty big jerk on take off, but once it was going it was fine. Then when taking it off it sort of jerk and stopped. I could still put it in gear but I could only go slow, if I went any faster it would make all sort of noises like is was grinding. Going in reverse worked fine. Once back on land I check the oil in the lower unit, there was some but was definetly really low. The engine like I said is running fine, I’ve run it a few times over winter and she’s tip top. I’m new to boats and just wanted to see if you guys could give me a bit of an idea what it might be before I take it into a shop. If it was very low on oil is this what would happen? If I just simply fill it up would that fix the issue or would I have done some damage already?

Thanks guys heaps

Jaza, There is a small hope that your prop has a spun hub. Do you have a known good prop you could try and see if the issue goes away?

If that is not the answer, and not to be rude, but it takes experience and special tools to inspect and repair a gearcase. It would be a difficult repair for most outboard shadetree mechanics.

I would recommend that you first price a new gearcase from SEI. That will frame the cost. Secondly, a dealer might test the gearcase for free, and give you an estimate of the repair cost. I would expect that repair cost to be close or maybe higher than the new SEI gearcase. If so, I would opt for the new gearcase.
