Re: Mercury 150HP on my boat?

Heres what I did on my Flatbottom Transom. 2 plates, 5200, rock solid. The 2 front templates were an idea for 2 braces, but got in the way, and not needed.

Beautiful, beautiful boat, Scatty. Looks like an old SK type hull with the flaring bow coming to a point, tumblehome transom, and raised dash and cockpit. Was it a brand name or custom built?

Re: Mercury 150HP on my boat?

hey i will say this i have a 150 evinrude 1983 on a 16ft mckeecraft
its fast and stable but mostly due to the hull design and the quality of the transom. its rated at 115 hp . i went down to a 70 hp 3cyl evin 1976 and
it was a little slower 20 mph slower but got way better gas mileage
i sold it and put 150 back on its a whole lot more fun with the hp but the gas milage suffers .it also pushes the limits of boat so you have to be carefull.
not to get stupid but also you want to be able to run 5500 or so .
and that means pushing the limit. i usually run it clean on strait aways.
if i had my choice i would like to have a old 4cyl looper 115 but i got what i got. thanks Bennyb

Long story..my Merc Guru picked it up out of Oregon, on a seized drug bust..(ex cop..ended up with two, but the one he stuffed an XS150 Merc on, had no side chine drops..way too squirrly..and tabs (hydraulic) that would push one up, and the other down..(NOW we are talking about a boat left..driver right..in the air!)
Its called an Olsen ..but ALL my searching does zip on it...probably re titled because of the drug seize with the owners name.
Like an old Raysoncraft (SK type hull), but not the same. SOLID hull...only two lengthwise stringers..ZERO FLEX! Like a brick.
It has two 2 big fins underneath, and the hull has 1 inch dropped chines for air enhancement..(you can see them in the pic..look at the sides of the plates).. and a 12 inch pad. Runs on air. Can't TOUCH the trim..gotta keep it tucked level or porpose..and same as getting on plane..(running a 135 crank up rebuild..12x24 cupped hubless SS..big cup ..boat probably only around 500LBS).... that just on a punch, cavitates to 4000r's ...soon starts grabbing..goes down to 3000'r, and freaking takes OFF! 5500 WOT..(needs an XS 150, that will run a 28 pitch 2 blade..then go for 6500R'S
Jetski jockeys are put in there place..Accell, and WFO..don't know the MPH, but 65 plus easy should be a reality..still breaking in the motor.
and ZERO water over the back on Decell...only 12 inch freeboard..and the Flatbottom leaves little wake..(damn..mostly floats on TOP of the water!)
Got a bunch of pix on the build..did it last winter. Ended up yanking the Pass seat...room for a cooler with a 6 Pack..more fun than those.."I want a RIDE"..BS..my toy! I toss them the keys too the 20 foot Bayliner Force..(some complain of the old Force 125's (88)....me? new Stator, driveshaft (salt did it in..snapped..one piece)..and its a work horse on my Bayliner..
You also give SUPER knowledge on those old pup's, on the Force Forum..thanks..
Out in the shop messing with my bikes now..I get back in the house..I'll flip out a few more pix.
DAMN, my kinda THREAD!! Insure'ed off State Farm zero prob..insure my butt for $300,000 Lilabilty..$3500 on the package if someone wants it without my knowledge. Have 3 other boats, and 4 motorcycles with SF..and the house and 4 wheelers..I make the rules..(plus my brother runs a Insurance Biz in SoCal..know the ins and outs..or I'm going "Gieco"...INS..what a SCAM!...anyway..tell them the truth, cover yer ***..then go have FUN!
The day I let some suit in a "Tie" tell me what to do, is get out the guns..and 2 more years I'm 60. Just bought a 150 HP Rear wheel Sportbike....why..??...Cause I can..worlds speeding up, and I aint getting left behind!

Oh yeah...that hull splits the wind so well, that you need zero in eye/wind protection....and one other thing..Flatbottoms at speed ...hitting a unseen wake off a plowing barge...slap's my old butt silly..but still a grin!..(went out last time last year..slapped a biggie running 60's....started out at 5 foot 11...came back somewhere 5 foot 6..4 weeks of SORE! I need a Hydrauic seat..getting to old fer this stuff...(kinda):D

Re: Mercury 150HP on my boat?

Oh, I hear ya, Scatty! My little 14 foot flattie also does air time off wakes--Like to knock the teeth out--real ones that is. At 62 I still have all the original equipment. Thing that caught my fancy with that hull was that the front end looked like an aircraft carrier. So I bought it for 70. Then I started the rebuilding which has not yet finished. Once, at speed, I caught a low flying bird under the flare and pushed it into the water--Didn't hurt it but--Man! If birds could give dirty looks!

I saw your step. Mine also has a center step but about 2-2 1/2 feet wide. When I nail the 90 with full down trim she immediately jumps onto plane at 45 then as I feed in up trim RPM and speed rise. At about 5400 and full up trim the prop locks up and it feels like an upshift in a muscle car. Then she goes the rest of the way to 56. Only engine mod is lower unit is vented for less back pressure and so people can hear me coming. Lartsa fun! And rock solid to boot. No chine walk, no fishtail, nothing but a 30 foot roostertail. That little hull really surprised me--never expected it to handle the speed so well.

Currently she rides on the last foot of hull and there is no steering above 45--not enough hull in the water to turn her. I'm thinking of putting on turn fins but first I want to experiment with chine rails to deflect water down and give more lift to the hull. Right now I'm running a 21 pitch stainless uncupped. I have a stainless 21 pitch cupped cleaver with blades thinned to about knife blade thickness. So: if I can get the 90 to 6000 or 6200 with it, I should get 60. If that don't do it, the 125 goes on right after, turning a 25 pitch prop. One way or the other, that puppy is going to go.

Re: Mercury 150HP on my boat?

I know where yer coming from!
I wish I had my old dual horizantal rams like my old XS150. The stock PT+T is a little to quick. But seems to like to just float over the water nice tucked in level (I also miss that big old "tail" I got off the XS, riding on the last foot of the boat!)
Plus I need a foot throttle..(PT controls a rocker on the wheel)
Still getting it dialed in, but need to put 4-5 more hours on the motor. Have 4 different props, but like the 12/24 SS the best so far, as it does not seem to add much drag when ya let off, then some bow steer shows up. Ya just have to pay attention to whats going (and it happens FAST..things like a freaking gokart!

3 more pix..when I picked it up, little break-in on the trailer, and running at about 45 keeping the R's down. Still need tweaking of the trim tabs, finish break-in time..get it dialed come summer
