This is a 2004 Merc 15hp two stroke, that had not been started for a few years. I got the motor given to me so that I could salvage the electric start for another motor. I decided to try and get the motor working again. It was running when it was put up, oil was sprayed into cylinders and fuel burned out. I hooked up the gas line and started the engine. It ran rough and then more smoothly. After a few seconds I heard and metallic sound and then it shut down. When I pulled on the crank rope, I fund that there was no compression. I need some help or suggestions on what could have happened and what I could do to repair the engine. If it's time to give up on it, let me know that also.

Easy to check. Put it in gear and see if the prop turns too. That would tell you if you’re actually turning the engine over too. Take the plugs out and feel for compression too. Sure sounds like it could be the flywheel key

Don't worry to much if the prop doesn't turn when you pull it over. Those motors are notorious for breaking the drive shaft.
