Is one able to replace or fix the recoil anymore of a 1951 Mercury Super 5? And also is there a rope pull starter on top of the flywheel under the recoil? I was thinking about buying one always wanted one, thank you.

Those recoils are pretty simple to fix if spring is broken, cable/rope shredded, etc. Not hard to find parts for, either, as the recoil bits themselves are common to the Mark 5, KF5, Mark 6 and some Merc-built Wizard models, too.

Great, I'll have to get in it and see what is involved, another thing I was wondering in the lower unit diagram I don't see a shear pin do these motors not have one?, thank you very much

No, they do not. Rather, they have a splined shaft that engages a slip clutch assembly made up of a sandwich stack of metal and fiber discs, held in compression with a spring in the prop nut. Sounds a lot more complicated than it is...

It has the cable wrapped around a spool, under the cover I see the spring around the edge, one end appears to be broken, it is missing the part that holds them both together, that is what I need, found the spring for $41, I don't see a place for a rope starter under everything, the powerhead seems to have low hours on it thank you

Mercury typically didn't put a sheave on their flywheels for emergency rope starting back in those days....
