I'm looking at buying a 1984 50 horse longshaft (4 cylinder) in good running condition. It has a prop. lower unit. I have a non running 1978 50 horse short shaft (4 cylinder) with a jet lower. I want to end up with a short shaft jet outboard. Is it possible to: 1.Swap the mid sections (exhaust housing) or 2 do a power head swap? I need to know if the parts are compatible.
Thanks!

Did you ever get this accomplished? I am looking to do the same on a 1979 40 hp mercury.

No, because I was given a working SS motor. I do know that the parts are compatible for a large span of years, I just don't know the exact span. The motor I was given is a 74 case and LU with an 84 power head.
