mercury 2005 50 4 stroke 860 hours

hi people i just finished my tinnie 4.6 stacer seamaster

i bought a mercury 2005 50 4 stroke to go on the back the guy i bought it of told me it was used for private use and it had only done 200 to 300 hours witch i thought was ok after i got the motor went out for the first time got about 200 meters the alarm when off got the boat back took it to the boat mechanic he plug his computer in to it he said to me the motor was no good and it had 860 hours the alarm when of because there was no oil pressure some one put the wrong oil in it and buggerd the oil pressure switch and its blowing blue smoke but i would think the smoke would be becauase of 15 hours in transport laying on its side... so he fixed all that he motor runs nice he still reckons the motor is not good so i told him to do a compression test he was shocked how much compression it had it had a bit over 200 psi on all cyl

so my question is is 860 hours alot for these motors or maybe be has it had a rebuilt and is 200psi good i know its got a new leg also the price i paid 5000 was it worth it

Hi bigtomo, welcome to iboats!

Please use punctuation, it gives me a headache trying to read one long sentence.

860 hours is not a lot for ANY motor if it has been maintained correctly. Yours has not (been maintained correctly) but by the sounds of the comp reading, me thinks you have dodged a bullet.

Doesn't matter if it is worth what you paid. It's running sweet now, enjoy.

sorry about not using punctuation

i just got the boat back today going for a run tomorrow. Another question do you know if you can reverse flush these motors and if there is any benfit.

Yes they can be reverse flushed, the telltale outlet hole is designed to take a normal size garden hose (1/2"). My 2004 merc manual actually recommends reverse flushing.

What country are you in?

ok thanks also when reverse flush should the motor be running or off.
some people say it should not be running but i dont have a manual to find out.
do you think the 50 4 stroke was a good pick or 4.6 stacer.
its seems that the mercury motors are very popular

to answer my own question it was not worth it

when for a run today got about 500 meters then the motor lost power

i thought that was strange i turned the motor off the make sure it had oil and fuel again. started with the cover off to have a listen i found the problem

it through a bearing a big end took it to andrew short marine and they comfirmed it.

THIS MADE ME HEAPS HAPPY

Damn, looks like you didn't dodge the bullet after all.

These motors also have a habit of 'making oil'. it is critical to maintain the correct oil level.

I have 600 hrs on mine and it is still running as sweet as day one.

For future reference (and for anyone doing a forum search) these motors are designed to be reverse flushed. Fit the garden hose as described, turn the tap on 1/2 way (not full, full is too much pressure). Start the motor so that it warms up and opens the thermostat. Never rev the motor above idle.

yep thats the problem about used motors you dont realy get much of info
on the life its had.

now its time to fight to get my money back
