Mercury 20hp thunderbolt What year "With Pictures"

I just got this motor for free i see its missing the start no big deal but I'm trying to fig out what year the motor is i looked in the 4 posted sites on here and i couldn't find the serial number i found on the motor.

Here is the serial number i got = 1427-3264 i think this is the right number...

that serial number sounds like early sixty's model, are you sure it is a 20 hp, post a pic if you can. ss

late 60's to maybe 70 or so. serial number doesn't jive. check again for more numbers. ss

Would you know where they would be at i looked all over and those are the only one i seen and these

between the transom clamp screws on top. there should be a data plate riveted on there. just below the choke knob

I notice its missing a start and who else knows if i take some pics of the motor can you guys let me know if its missing anything else i want to get this thing running

If the covers are original, it's a '68-'71 model.

Serial # range would be from 2296267 to less than 3226958 (the starting # of the 1972 model run).

A further way to narrow down the year would be that 1968-69 models have conventional ignition, with the ign coils under the flywheel. '70-'71 models are CDI ign and have (2) ign coils mounted externally on the aft upper part of the powerhead.

Std ign models take an L77JC4 spark plug while electronic ign models use a surface-gap L78V. These are Champions or use the crossover equivalents for other brands.

Their parts diagrams should help you figure out what you've got.

Its a 70-71 model now i just got to fig out whats missing and what i need
