I recently purchased a Mercury 225 efi.I would like to know if there is a way to visualy tell if the engine has been hot before. There was some white looking stuff on the sides of the lower unit right below the bottom cowl that came off with rubbing compound. The engine runs fine and compression is good.

Sounds like that may have been some corrosion...white powdery stuff?

hunter, that white stuff is not a result of overheating, it's just deposits from water...

My 97 225 EFI shows the same minor white stuff. (saltwater use)

An overheated motor will also show signs of paint peeling(different than corrosion) on the heads and block.
