i ,m new on this forum,is there someone who can help me with my question.
i,ve a pontoon boat with a 25hp mercury 2 stroke 2004 and i'd like to change it for a 25hp mercury 4 stroke 2000.
before that i buy the other motor 25hp 4 stroke i,d like to know if somebody have ever make a change like that.
the steering cable and the control cable seem the same. probably my pontoon was equipped before with a bigger engine.
the pitch gauge for the trim is already installed on the dash.
but what bother me is the wiring connection for the engine, i dont know if the connection plug are the same.
usually when you buy a boat or a pontoon it is possible to have the engine of your choice ,that why i want to know if it will be a lot of trouble to change my engine for a 4 stroke.
thank a lot

The steering, and the control cables will most likely be OK to use. But the remote control and wiring harness will be different. Make sure you get the remote control with the engine and you should be fine.

Since the four stroke is a 2000, I would bet that the wiring cable will just plug in under the engine cowl. The control box should be the same. However, You should get a control box with the four cycle engine and it is NOT a difficult job to run the cables and wire.

Butch. Got to ask, why would you swap a 2004 2 stroke, for a 2000 4 stroke??

hello,i want to swap for a 4 stroke mainly because the 4 stroke as a power trim and it is less noisy than a 2 stroke.
am i wrong.
you think that i should keep my 2 stroke
I,ve heard that a 2 stroke is more performant than a 4 stroke,is it true.
thank you for answering my question

hello Frank ,thank you for answering my question,
my pontoon is equipped with a control box whicht has a trim knob for raising up and down the engine and also have a trim gauge.
that is why i am wondering if it will work, and i beleive that the pontoon was equipped with a 4 stroke or an engine equipped with a power trim
thank you and i apologize for my english

Butch,
Yes you will loose top end performance, but the lack of stink and fuel economy are worth the small loss. They also need more attention for valve lash, timming belts and oil and filter changes @ $7.00 a filter and $12.00 for a quart of oil.
You can take the plug harness off of the 2 stroke and install it on the 4 not alot of difference. if the linkages work on the remote control.

In pontoon service either engine is working very hard so the savings in fuel is minimal and therefore hardly worth the effort and cost. You will definitely lose performance. Noise difference is also not as great as expected. At higher throttle settings both engines get very close to each other. The noise is different which makes many folks think it is quieter.
