I have a 80s model 25 HP outboard and have replaced (and broken) several anodes now. part No. 94286 .

Seems the bolt, once tight enough to hold, breaks the anode. Tried thread lock and lightly tightening bolt and bending the 'washer' thing so the anode couldn't move, but there is too much play in the tab that fits into the anode. Seems like a spacer between the bottom of the foot and the anode would do the trick to keep the pressure off the outside edges of the anode.... is there some trick here?

What is the trick to properly bending the 'washer' as well?

PLEASE HELP

P.S.
Dear Mercury....Seems almost stupid to make such an important part to proper performance out of soft alloy, unless you want to sell parts and giggle at your customers. Build me one out of aluminum PLEASE. I will make my own Sac Anode

You cannot make it out of aluminum will no longer be a sacrificial anode and it is not a performance part. It is there to protect the motor from corrosion. I just have a lock washer to hold mine tight. The space in the tab is there for adjustability against steering torque.

I think you missed my point.
A sac. anode could be jerry-rigged in another location on the motor. I want the performance of the trim fin to counter the pulling of the motor, and the anode metal is too soft.

A lock washer won't help, you would still have to tighten it against the part and it won't take the pressure. Maybe there is supposed to be a part/ spacer between the anode and the foot? I find nothing of the sort on the parts diagram.

Use a flat washer with the lock washer on top of it. You could use threadlock but it's not necessary. Don't tighten the bolt so much that you're ruining threads. It should be OK - the alloy isn't that soft.

I have 4 of these motors all my zinc nodes are held in place by a bolt and lock washer and never had a problem. Are you using a standard bolt in the tab I think they are metric. You might just be tightening the bolt way to tight.
