Hiya,
I got a new engine tonight and the above has happen by the previous owner, he said it still starts ok but when you goto put any power it stalls, was ran with old petrol that had turned into gunge accidently.

Any suggestions for me how to get this working ok or things to check, I havent tried it myself yet or even taken the lid off, Im not a mechanic or even remotely knowledgable but I will give anything a go.

Cheers
Pete

Obviously you have to dump the gas, clean the tank AND fuel line. Then get fresh gas and oil.Beyond that I suggest you have someone clean the engine lines, filter and rebuild the carb. This is not exactly HARD,but it sounds like you should have it done.

thanks for that, someone today has told me to try adding redex to the gas to help it get rid of the gunk and clean the jets, is this a good idea?

it is a preventative, not a cure. the only way to get it out is physically, and it sticks to everything, and blocks passages.

DON'T spray carb cleaner into the carb. It needs to be an oil mix. Try a product called Deep Creep that has lube in it or use a premix that you make yourself.
Get the carbs cleaned and get rid of the old gas.

after you do the carbs, do a link & sinc, this puts the electrical and carbs in sinc so the work together properly.

pete, get a manual, at 'oldmercs.com' it is a must if you are going to try to do your on maintainance. your engine runs on a 50-1 mix of gas and tcw3 outboard motor oil thats 6 US gallons of gas to 16 US oz of tcw3 oil. this is the premix. just put some of this in a spray or squeeze bottle and inject a little in the carb mouth. never use starting fluid sold in stores, as it has no oil and burn at a much higher temperature, and can ruin your engine in a instant. the link & sinc is a step by step procedure, that is in the manual. seeing you metioned "petrol" you will have to convert the gallons and ounces. as far as the carb it need to be dismantled and soaked overnight in a carb cleaning solution, blowing out with compressed air, and them reassembled with a rebuild kit. good luck.
