If you look at a 8hp 9.9hp and a 15hp 2stroke merc they are all on the same block and look 100%identical so what is the differences between them?Is it just the carb or are there a bunch of different things on all 3?I have taken the cowl off all 3 at the same time a while back and they like the same engine. Can anyone tell me what seperates the hp besides the carb or is that it?

Re: Mercury 2stroke portable question

Four strokes 8 & 9.9 HP share a 210 CC block, 15 & 20 HP shares a 350 CC block. The 8 is the detuned version of the 9.9 generally carb restricted and in some cases as in 2 strokes same versions less timing along carb restriction. Portable newer models are manufactured by Tohatsu, which should cost a tad less on same HP versions :D

Re: Mercury 2stroke portable question

Tohatsu is also making evinrudes 4stroke portable motors also.Tohatsu is probally the biggest outboard manufacture out there. It's amazing a 20hp merc is close to $400 more then a 20hp tohatsu while the powerhead is 100%the same. The biggest difference between the merc and the tohatsu is the merc has an auto ratchet tilt system which i think is unmatched by any motor. That system is worth the extra $400 to me as it6 makes the merc so easy to tilt up and down with little effort. The merc also has the full controls in the tiller compared to a shifter on the tohatsu.

Re: Mercury 2stroke portable question

on the earlier 9.8 and 15hp, it was a carb and exhaust change between the two

later, its a different block.

regarding Merc vs Tohatsu - premium name and service network demand a premium price. you can find Merc parts in podunk iowa. try finding Tohatsu parts in podunk (even if its the exact same motor)
