Hi All,

Real quick question as I don't know much about the older Mercs, this one is a 1985. I have heard of the 470 and to stay away, how about this motor, any good?

Thanks

The 3.7 is a 470.

You heard right.

You should stay away.

There's a LOT of boats out there for sale that have engine/drives that are still being made and/or are well supported.

Do a search for "Mercruiser 470 problems"

Find something with a 4.3. the weight difference in not that big, but the potential for power is. Those 3.7's don't put out much more hp than a current 3.0, when you take into account prop versus crank ratings.

The 190 hp you are referring to I believe is actually the 188 hp. They made two versions of the 3.7, one with a 2 barrel carb making 170 horse, the 470, and one with a 4 barrel and a couple other changes that produced 188 horse, the 488. The motors are virtually idenitcal, so all the great things you have heard about the 470 applies directly to the "190 hp 4 Cyl" you are referring to.

I now have a boat with a 4.3...but still have my old boat with a 470. Everything you hear about them is true...I had everyone of the problems that have been well documented...but I have a personal attachment to the old girl, so I rebuilt the motor about 4 years ago and work to keep her afloat.

Unless taking on regular projects is a form of stress relief for you....staying away is good advice.

Thanks guys,

I am not the backyard mechanic, so your advice is well taken. Too bad, the guy put a ton of money into the boat, but I don't want to take on a known pitfall....the engine/outdrive.

I like the 5.0 Mercs, have not seen a bad write up yet, I will stay true to my gut and stay with it.

Thanks again,

Mike
