Ok, here is the problem I have a early 80's 40hp mercury that is not running correctly. It runs fine for about a few minutes and then stops running at all. When it stops it is almost like it is out of gas, but I promise you this is not the case. I made sure it was getting fuel as well as made sure the mix was correct. I did however find that there was a crack in the cover over the thermostat. But I was still getting a nice strong flow of water exiting the motor. I was just curious if this crack could be causing the motor to run hot which in turn shuts it down. Any help would be appreciated. Also I was wanting some opinions on rebuilding a powerhead. I recently aquired a powerhead that was in good shape but needed a rebuild. Is this somthing which you guys feel someone like my self who is pretty handy with cars could do or is this a little out of my league. What is a good book to help me through this proccess as well.

Thanks

I don't think the crack is your problem, next time it quits ck for spark, it sounds like a ign. failure. If it don't have fire let us know, and the serial number of the engine
