Hi,
This is my first post, sorry if this topic has already been covered, I couldnt see any other posts with the same problem.
I have a 40hp mercury 402 outboard and I am having trouble getting it started, It will only try to start if I have the choke flap fully closed and the throttle fully open, then it will fire and rev quite high but die after a few seconds.
I have cleaned terminals on the coils, cleaned the carb thoroughly with carb cleaner and compressed air, I have ordered some new plugs as they have certainly seen better days but I have a feeling its not going to solve my problem. I have also tried adjusting the idle speed valve as I thought perhaps the mixture was to leen but it had no positive affect so I set it back to where it was originally.
after it has fired and tried to start It doesnt want to try and start again, so I removed the plugs and found they were wet,
could it be the plugs? could it be getting to much fuel? or could it be an electrical problem when the ignition system is under load? and is there a way to set the idle speed valve with the engine not running ( since it wont start, it is currently wound out 1 and a half turns from its seated position )
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated, I will keep you posted should I manage to figure it out.
Thanks in advance,
James
