Hello fellas, please help me with a little question. There are two motors, Evinrude 4hp and Mercury 4hp , same ages, same condition and same price ~ CAN$ 350. Which one is better will be for my 9 ft. inflatable.

Either engine will perform about the same. I have a question though. Does your inflatable have an inflatable Keel? If not you might want to get the highest HP that the boat allows. Inflatables without inflatable keels do not push well.

TMD

FYI, If the Merc is the old single-cylinder design, they can be a little "buzzy" sounding, as the Johnrudes are generally 2-cylinder in that size range and run a bit smoother... The Mercs run fine, just make a bit more vibration noise...
- Scott

I would buy the evinrude over the mercury, as I had a newer 4 hp merc and it was nothing but trouble. Had to row home several times. got rid of it and bought a older 6 hp evinrude and just love it...

If that's an 2 cylinder 4hp Mercury (a Gnat), avoid it at all costs. Some guy out there describes it (accurately) as 'awsomely horrid.' The normal operation of the tilt mechanism alone will give you fits.

Actually, it is an alright engine when everything is just so, but the one I have has been my problem child. Parts are mostly unavailable, or astronomically priced. The plastic pull start gear, which doesn't last long, is $85CDN to replace!

The 3hp (similair design to the later 4hp) evinrude runs like a top.

Hello
without knowing any year models I would have to pick the jonnyrude. merc parts are way to expensive and the one lung mercs are dicey some times. the only hard part of the OMC 4 is changing the starter rope :) :)good luck and keep posting

Hi, Serzyk.

I, too, would prefer the JohnnyRude, regardless of year.

Two cylinders are soooo much smoother than one. I have had several 3 and 4hp JohnnyRudes and all were wonderful engines and easy to work on (with a manual). Parts were easy to find and inexpensive.

Good luck. :)
