Hi All, I have a Mercury 50 HP 1985 2 stroke outboard, serial number 5485437.
I have been searching , cant find any information based on the serial number.
The engine was running fine, went to put in the water, now it wont start,
It would appear there is no spark on any of spark plugs.
I'm leaning towards the stator has gone defective, however I'm challenged to find information regarding troubleshooting the stator. Does anyone have information based on the attached picture , ie: Resistive values between wires and voltage readings.Mercury OB.jpg

I've had a couple of those motors. Awesome performance and reliability but they're old. Electrical stuff wears out too.

Almost 40 years ago I had the same problem with my first motor. It turned out that when I pulled the key from the ignition, I'd accidentally flipped the kill switch. Took me awhile to figure out what happened, but I flipped the switch back up and all is well.

On my most recent engine, it had more of the usual losing power, not charging and carb cleaning issues. I also had a couple of dumba$$ moments while troubleshooting.
If you can find a manual for that engine, it's a great help.

CDI electronics likely makes parts for your motor. They used to have a troubleshooting guide as well. Failing that a Mercury brand service manual should give resistance specs for the stator.
