I have a 1977 Mecury 50 that won't go into neutral! Had it out a couple of days ago and everything was fine. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be.

Could be a lot of things. Give us a description of what happened and when you noticed it. Also a SER# would be nice.

Re: Mercury 50

was it in reverse when you lifted it? You may have damaged the cam and a peice of it may be lodged in the shift shaft

did you try turning the flywheel a bit to get it to shift also did you check the linkage for blockage?

I would disconnect the cables and try to shift it manualy by hand

Re: Mercury 50

the shifter cable connect to the side of the engine. be caferul to undo the screws a little at a time not to totally remove the screws just enough to remove the cable or you will be searching for them in the bottom of the cowel (NO FUN) I was hoping i had a picture of something sowing the cables. No luck. They are on the left rear of the boat going into the engine through a little port hole in the cowel you have the throttle and the shifter cable there.

View attachment 91542View attachment 91543View attachment 91544 On this engine it is the lower cable probably the same as yours after detaching it you will have to get somethng to slide the shfiter linkage back and forth to test if its above or below this point If it shifts fine your shifter is messed up if not time check all the uper componants to the shift shaft then move down to find the problem

one cable end gold to black bottom connects to the shifter shaft that would be the siver arm that turns the shaft Check your throttle after removing the shifter cabl and see if it moves
