the 12v red wire that is in the harness that goes to the key, is it just to activate the starter selinoid?

Will it kill the motor if this wire is deactivated?

Or does this motor HAVE to ground the magneto wire (Yellow-black) to kill it?

Re: Mercury 50hp 2strk electrical question

The red wire going to the control supplies power to the key switch which in turn supplies power to the selinoid to start the motor . It also supplies power to the electric choke and any gauges, lights on the boat, and other accessories. There is also a ground wire from the motor to the key switch that supplies the needed ground for the accessories and the kill switch inorder to kill the motor. As for you question ,
1=yes and no
2=no, it will just not start the motor
3=yes, as there are a tilt mercury switch on the motor and man overboard switch that also can kill the motor

The yellow red wire is the starter position on key switch that when turned to the start position sends a signal to the starter solenoid. This activates the solenoid and sends the copper wahser up to make a connection between the positive battery terminal, and the starter wire teminal engaging the starter. The red wire is just a power supply to the key switch This is needed for the signal to be sent to the solenoid, The Key switch when turned to the on run posisiton lets the 12 v courrent flow to other componants as stated by Oldman570. The only time 12 v is suppleid to the yellow red stripe wire is when the key is turned to the starting position just to start the motor. There is a ground wire that when the ket switch is turne to the off position grounds out the Magnito stator whatever is sending the current to run the engine. Disconnecting the red positive wire when the engine is running will not kill the engine as it runs on its own power source. JMO
