mercury 50hp gearbox problem

i have a merc 500 blueband 2 stroke model, i changed th impellor the other day but putting it back together wernt so easy for some reason the gear selector spindle in the lower leg is just spinning round and round and is stuck in drive???? has anyone got any ideas how to fix this? i cant see anyway of taking it apart

It sounds like the shift shaft is not lined up. I have a 1974 50 hp 500, and I just changed the impeller and same thing, it stayed in gear. I unbolted the lower unit and slid it down about an inch, moved the shift lever about 1 to 2 inches and slid the lower unit back up, and luckily it worked!!!

ive tried that, the problem is in the lower leg the shaft in the leg is just spinning im sure it should just turn left and right to select gears, but i dont know whats happened as i cant get the leg apart i cant see any way of taking it apart!
