Hi,
Is it 2 strokes or 4 strokes? Any advice on lower unit please. Lower unit slip on forward works fine on reverse. One propeller blade is bend; I think they hit a rock or something
Thank you

Your motor is a 2-stroke. Drain and refill the lower unit fluid once a year. Sounds like the prop hub spun when it hit whatever. You need to have the prop repaired by a prop shop or buy a new one. Also, purchase a Manual from the bottom of this page to help you work on it. It will also explain many of the common questions.(Check the prop out first before you replace anything in the lower unit)

That 4 cylinder is also one of the better motors made by Merc.....very smooth and makes a jim-dandy troling motor cause its cross flow(cheap on gas..)

Re: Mercury 50HP specs

Have you actually tried the motor to discover the "skipping", or are you basing it on just spinning the prop? If the latter, then that's actually normal. Mercury designed the gears with a ramped side on the engagement surfaces so that the prop can free-wheel upon decceleration and not cause the motor to tilt up into the boat. If you spin the prop in forward gear and get a ratcheting sound, you're good to go....
- Scott

remove the shift cable and try to manually shift
gears to rule out bad cable. you'll need a prop
puller to get the prop off.
at the very least, install new impeller and L/U
oil. fresh gas with good oil.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: Mercury 50HP specs

Hi there, scoot men you hit the nail. The lower is working very well. I just came from the water and ran the boat for about two hours went to a restaurant on the intercostals and got something to eat and believe me I did enjoy my boat. I’m first time owner and I was very excited about everything. I’m very happy with my Bass tracker. However I could not run the motor full throttle. I did use the same propeller that has one blade bend. The motor start right up, impeller is working fine and run really good on idle and full throttle but when I move the stick to full throttle the boat runs like if it was on half throttle is like the motor is not getting to a full throttle. I don’t know if that is happening because of the propeller been with one blade bend or if is something that if have to do with the throttle cable or is the motor in really bad condition? To me the motor is fine. The motor respond really nice to reverse, forward and there is no vibration on the motor it run so nice but that is just to me I am a new owner and I don’t now much about this things. But I really did enjoy today my boat. Any advice please I will appreciate.
Thank you

1. At least get the owners manual, read it and perform ALL recommended maintenance.

2. Get rid of the bent prop. Either get it fixed or replace. It could trash the lower unit.

3. Sign up for a Power Squadron or United States Coastguard Auxiliary boating course and learn the rules of the road.

c/6

Hooty
